Synopsis
Commissioned by the British Film Institute as part of their ‘Century of Cinema’ series, Stanley Kwan approaches the Chinese cinematic tradition with a queer sensibility in this unusual documentary. Contextualising and historicising queer cultural practices within a broad array of films from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, Stanley Kwan provocatively examines issues of gender and sexuality through interviews with directors Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Tsai Ming-Liang, Ang Lee and Tsui Hark. Negotiating between the personal and collective, Kwan takes his sexuality and familial history as a springboard to explore the deeper homoerotic undertones of Chinese cinema.
Yang ± Yin is a pivotal product of Kwan’s career wherein he publicly declared his sexuality and became the first openly gay auteur to represent the community in Sinophone cinema.
