Full Synopsis
The lives of a housewife (Jeanne Chin), the diner waitress who sends her suggestive texts, and a werewolf payroll clerk (Radmar Jao) intersect in this wild tale from co-directors Quentin Lee and Justin Lin (before Better Luck Tomorrow and Fast and Furious fame). Its genre elements, slice-of-life leanings, inclusion of characters with shifting identities, and Wong Kar-wai references spin a raucous metaphor for the horror of assimilation. Filmed on a shoestring budget in the San Gabriel Valley, the epicenter of Asian immigrant diasporas in Southern California, Shopping for Fangs was also one of the “Class of ‘97”—the first year there was such a group of feature fiction films made by Asian American filmmakers in a single year—leading to an exciting decade of independent Asian American fiction filmmaking in the 2000s.
This film is featured in the strand Super Indie, part of the Constellating Histories: Encountering Asian American Diasporas Onscreen programme. For the full programme lineup please click here.
