Synopsis
Adapted from an anonymous web novel that was popular among the Chinese gay community and shot clandestinely in Beijing, Lan Yu follows the intermittent relationship between a wealthy businessman Han Dong (Hu Jun) and a poor college student Lan Yu (Liu Ye) after a one-night stand. Entrenched in China’s political anxieties of economic reforms and civil unrest, the film is a heady blend of eroticism, passion and tragedy, and an oblique critique of the unbending social persecution against the LGBTQ+ community.
