Full Synopsis

From the city of Kuala Lumpur, Betik returns to live and reconnect with his widowed mother in his home village in the rural Malaysian oil palm estate. He takes on a day job shooting karaoke videos and helps out at the family’s karaoke bar at night. He meets and begins a romance with a local girl, but soon finds that life is more complex than the scenes in karaoke videos. It makes him ponder where he stands with his family and how he has to adapt to a rapidly modernising Malaysia.

Karaoke is Malaysian artist and filmmaker Chris Chong’s debut feature that premiered at Directors’ Fortnight of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. It won the Mavericks Award at the 2009 Calgary International Film Festival.
