After graduating from Harvard College, the Standard Oil heir Michael Rockefeller conducted field recordings during the 1961 Harvard-Peabody Expedition amongst the indigenous Hubula (also known as Dani) people, which resulted in the canonical ethnographic film, Dead Birds (1963), before disappearing while traveling through Dutch New Guinea (modern day West Papua). Utilising his recordings, these two Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab affiliates crafted a stunning modern sonic ethnography. Expedition Content rejects the primacy of the image, embodies deep listening, and new research methodologies in collaboration with the communities they depict.
This film is featured in the strand Reclaiming History, part of the Constellating Histories: Encountering Asian American Diasporas Onscreen programme. For the full programme lineup please click here.
