An anarchist sexploitation tale, the Ecstasy of the Angels, follows the lives of various members of a revolutionary faction, each of whom is code-named after a day of the week. Sex, dialectics, brutality, and resistance intermingle as the film shifts the film shifts from black-and-white to colour – a common technique used in pink films in the mid-Sixties. Colour film strips would often be used for nudity or sex scenes to increase their impact, and proved to be a cost-efficient technique.
For this film, the prolific and pink film director Kōji Wakamatsu collaborated with Art Theatre Guild, a pioneering independent production and distribution company that was integral to the development of Japanese New Wave cinema in the Sixties and Seventies. What stems out of this collaboration is a departure from pink film’s space of pure exploitation towards the realm of the more arthouse and political filmmaking.
