Description:

A screening of the short film PLANET ∑  will precede the screening of Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness

Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness (1927)
Directed by: Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack
Runtime: 69 min
Country: USA
Language: Silent with intertitles
Rating: TBA

Shot entirely in Siam, Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness tells the story of the farmer Kru and his family who have settled on a small patch of land at the edge of the jungle. Their existence is a constant struggle against the many wild animals that surround them: bears, tigers, leopards and elephants. The climactic elephant stampede is one of the most exciting scenes in cinema history. This new release features a brilliant score by Bangkok composer Bruce Gaston and is performed by the world-famous orchestra, Fong Naam.

PLANET ∑ (2014)
Directed by: Momoko Seto
Runtime: 12 mins
Country: France
Language: No dialogue
Rating: Exempted from classification

PLANET ∑ is the third piece from Momoko Seto’s PLANET series, after PLANET A (Locarno 2008) and PLANET Z (Berlinale 2011).

PLANET ∑ is a dystopian tale set in an apocalyptic world where human beings have become extinct and only fungi and mold grow amid gigantic dried insect bodies. Earth is plagued by the effects of climate change and Momoko Seto’s created world becomes populated by strange marine creatures. The artist uses audiovisual technological advances to conceive new gravitational laws and to juxtapose temporalities to vertigo.

This short film immerses the viewer into a timeless, multi-spatial existence with a prophetic experience that wakes ecological awareness. PLANET ∑ received the Audi Short Film Award at the 65th Berlinale, a prize that distinguishes a work of “high artistic signature” and has since 2017 been integrated to Mori Art Tokyo Museum´s collection.

This screening is part of the Reframe: The (In) Hospitable World programme. For more information and the full lineup including additional screenings, please click here.
