In her hometown Osaka, the wide-eyed Asako experiences her first love with the enigmatic Baku. One day, he mysteriously disappears from her life. Two years later, in Tokyo, Asako begins dating Ryohei who is the spitting image of Baku. Together they build a life of romance and joy that starts to unravel as traces of the past begin to resurface.
Based on a novel of the same name by Tomoka Shibasaki, Asako I & II, Hamaguchi adopts more conventional tropes of romance and drama genres, whilst balancing darker, uncanny undertones.
