Director: Naoko Ogigami
Runtime: 110 minutes
Rent-a-Cat is episodically structured around the adventures of Sayoko, an unconventional young woman who operates a cat rental service for those in need of a furry companion. Some of the eccentric renters Sayoko encounters include: a lady mourning her lost cat and husband, a disenchanted car rental worker and even a former classmate who seems more interested in Sayoko than her feline friends.
In her sixth feature, director-writer Ogigami masterfully balances the peaceful effect of iyashikei eiga (emotional healing films) with deft comic timing. The result is a charmingly absurd set piece which pivots on the incongruities and anxieties of urban life to tell a quietly redemptive tale of self-care, bereavement and cats. Many cats.
