Asian Film Archive Presents Symposium on Singapore Cinema
Date: 20 September 2008 (Saturday)
Time: 9:00am – 6:00pm
Venue: Singapore Management University, Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium
Launched in 2007, the Asian Film Archive Presents Symposium series has established itself as an
important event on the local film events calendar. The Symposium
serves as an intellectual and practical nexus between
filmmakers from the region, industry professionals, film scholars, and students interested in films and its
industry.
In conjunction with the 40th anniversary of ASEAN in 2007, the Symposium on Southeast
Asian Digital Cinema involved more than 200 participants. This event
featured presentations from students vying for the Best Cineodeon Team, Best Film Paper, and the Best Inter-school
Film Project. Two panels consisting of distinguished filmmakers, film scholars
and film critics discussed issues concerning new South-east Asian cinema, film criticism and programming.
In total, 11 pre-tertiary and tertiary institutions were represented, including
National University of Singapore (NUS), LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore Polytechnic
and Hwa Chong Institution (High School).
This year, the Symposium shines a spotlight on Singapore Cinema. The outstanding work
of participants vying for the awards of Best Film Paper and Best Cineodeon Team
will be showcased. Additionally, a panel session featuring notable
speakers from the film industry will discuss issues regarding Singapore cinema. The Symposium on Singapore Cinema will culminate
in the inaugural Asian Film Archive Young Jury Awards. These awards will be voted
by a panel of Young Jury members, as part of our Moving Minds Lab programme. The
youths will honour film professionals in Singapore with prizes including the Best
Film, Best Director, Best Performance, Best Cinematography, amongst others. The Symposium
will be held at the Singapore Management University (SMU) Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium. All participating schools will be present.
