Launch of Singapore Shorts Vol. 2 DVD

Speaking of family members, the Singapore Shorts Vol. 2 DVD is curated on the theme of family with a selection of 9 acclaimed short films by local filmmakers. The launch of the DVD took place on 8 November 2008 at Kinokuniya (Ngee Ann City).  We appreciate the kind support given by Kinokuniya and the filmmakers who came down to the launch to grace the occasion with a special Q&A session with the public.  Not to mention, our dear friends who took the time to come down to offer congratulatory greetings and bring home a couple of DVDs fresh from the shelf!

The filmmakers presents were: Boo Junfeng, Loo Zihan, Brian Gothong Tan, Michael Tay, K. Rajagopal and Ryan Tan.  With all of them seated in a neat row with Bee Thiam as the moderator in the middle, our launch looks suspiciously like a album launch by a boyband and momentarily drew a crowd of curious young girls.  To start the ball rolling, the launch began with a self-introduction by the individual filmmakers. Bee Thiam proceeded to ask the filmmakers about the inspirations behind their films and we unearthed some interesting facts - Did you know that Imelda goes to Singapore took only one day to shoot? And the female character in Yesterday’s Play was Ryan’s mother?

Symposium on Singapore Cinema

The Symposium on Singapore Cinema, held on the 20th of September, culminated with the inaugural Asian Film Archive Young Jury Awards, which was helmed by a panel of youth members who decided upon the awards after watching 25 Singapore feature and short films that made up the film selection at the Cineodeon 2008 screenings. The Young Jury awarded top prizes to Eating Air by Kelvin Tong and Jasmine Ng and Ah Ma by Anthony Chen. 12 Storeys by Eric Khoo and Zo Gang by Jacen Tan received the Jury Prizes. For a complete list of the awardees, please refer to here.

Anthony Chen, one of the featured filmmakers, commented, “It is amazing what the Asian Film Archive is doing with young minds through something like Cineodeon. I have always believed that media and cultural literacy should start from a young age, and the future of filmmakers like myself is in the hands of this generation of youths who will form our audience in the years to come.”

Said Tan Bee Thiam, Executive Director of the Asian Film Archive, “Cineodeon is an outreach project for us to nurture and engage new young audiences for films in our collection. It also provides feedback to the film community on what young viewers feel about the films that we make, exhibit, critique and preserve.”

Thoughts from a Young Critic by Low Koon Yen

When the chance came to be a part of the Young Critics Programme, I jumped at it. Not least because of my newfound curiosity in film criticism, but it was also an opportunity to meet and talk with other like-minded people. And I got my wish at the first meeting, with the mentors going at each other, sparring in words, while the rest of us sat in humbled silence.

The subsequent meetings were to be hours-long (three-hour, to be specific) sessions of intellectual stimulation as mentors share their experience in writing film reviews and insightful perspectives into films. The sessions were a joy to be at, though the absence of an agenda might have contributed to the lack of focus during the discussions.

Cineodeon 2008 Boot Camp

Cineodeon 2008 got off to a flying start with the Cineodeon Boot Camp, a one-day workshop for participating teams to ready themselves for what is up ahead.

Held on 12 July at the Singapore Management University, the Boot Camp was attended by more than 100 students from schools like Hwa Chong Institution, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Institute of Technical Education, and last year's defending champions for Best Cineodeon Teams – Singapore Chinese Girls' Schools and Nanyang Technological University.

This year, the Best Cineodeon Teams will be awarded with a prize of 80 Film Garde Cineplex movie tickets at the upcoming iluma shopping center – certainly an enticing reward for the participating film buffs.

Held across three consecutive weekends in June, the Archive presented a series of In Conversation talks with the film Held across three consecutive weekends in June, the Archive presented a series of In Conversation talks with the film programmers from the foremost international film festivals – Berlin, Venice, Hong Kong and Toronto.

Made possible with the kind support of the National Library Board and The Substation, this series of In Conversation proved to be an enlightening examination into the complex and under-examined process of film programming, and was a fruitful experience for the filmmakers and film students in attendance.
