Educators’ Workshop: Understanding Singapore Through Comedies of P.Ramlee and Jack
Neo
|
|
The Asian Film Archive cordially invites educators, especially those teaching Languages,
the Humanities and National Education, to attend a workshop that will analyse the
comedies of P. Ramlee and Jack Neo and what they reveal about the historical, political
and cultural environments they are products of.
Course Description:
This course begins with a brief introduction to the development
of film comedy, and explores the comedies of P.Ramlee and Jack Neo. P. Ramlee was
a Malaysian film actor, director and songwriter who is well known for his comedic
films made in the 1950s and 1960s, especially those chronicling the misadventures
of the Three Bachelors. Actor-writer-director-producer Jack Neo is a popular TV
comedian who has written, directed and starred in a string of hits, like Money No
Enough and Liang Po Po, starring his 3-man team consisting of himself, Mark Lee
and Henry Thia. A comparison will be made between films of both directors, with
specific focus on their characters, cultural differences and social commentary.
Instructor: Hassan Muthalib wrote and directed public service and animation short
films, as well as Malaysia’s first animation feature film, Silat Legendas (1998).
Hassan also contributes to film scholarship by presenting papers on film and animation
in local and overseas universities, and submitting critical papers for local and
foreign publications. He co-authored the Malaysian Cinema segment in the book, Being
and Becoming: The Cinemas of Asia. In addition, he regularly conducts workshops
at top design and film colleges in Malaysia and overseas.
