|
|
Course Description:
This workshop introduces educators to the development of the
Asian horror genre, and methods of using horror films to teach critical reading
and narrative styles. It also examines the aesthetics of horror based on theories
from Edmund Burke and Mikhail Bakhtin. Participants will learn to critically read
the aesthetics of horror on film and link them with horror in other art forms such
as literature and paintings, use horror films to teach the narration of suspense,
as well as to understand the development of the Asian horror genre and how horror
and suspense are constructed on film.
Instructor: Danny Boey is presently teaching Film, Sound and Video, and Mass Communication
courses at the School of Film and Media Studies, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. He has obtained
a B.A. degree in Cinema Studies from the University of Toronto in 1994, and a M.A.

of Singapore in 2002. Danny’s primary research interest is in horror films. He is currently working on his dissertation, “The Culture-Specificity of Horror in Asian
