Educators' Workshop
Teaching Social Issues with Film
|
|
Workshop Description: This course is particularly relevant for educators
who teach English, Literature, Social Studies, National Education, General Paper,
and Visual/Media Communication. With the complexity of the world we live
in today, teaching social issues to young minds has become a necessary yet intricate
process. Across the spectrum of the Humanities, Politics, and Economics, the convergence
of societal and filmic issues make film a highly useful yet accessible teaching
tool. Participants will be coached on how to decode moving images through an exploration
of narrative, filmic techniques and context. Participants will be provided with
strategies on how to provoke and generate critical questions about a film’s implications
on social concerns.
Instructor: Tan Bee Thiam is a film historian, curator and filmmaker. He
is a founding member of 13 Little Pictures (13littlepictures.com), a film collective
bound by the spirit of collaboration to create films with unique directorial visions.
He produced the award-winning film, Red Dragonflies. He lectures on Asian Film History
at the Nanyang Technological University. He has been invited as jury member for
the international film festivals of Berlin, Locarno and Golden Horse.
