Educators' Workshop
Images of Women in Asian Films ::
A Conversation on Gender
|
|
Workshop Description: We are all interpreters of the world around us. Consider
the factors that demand, require, and/or enable interpretations of gender to take
shape. With Asian Films as a source, myriad images of women - reflecting regional
as well as international discourse - are revealed. In the process, roles and representations
of gender are witnessed. Through guided group discussion, contextual examples, and
filmic analysis, this workshop seeks to explore connections between images of women
in Asian Films, perspectives on gender, and outlooks toward women that emerge as
a result. This course is particularly relevant for educators who teach
English, Literature, Social Studies, National Education, General Paper, and Visual/Media
Communication. Through this conversation on Asian Films and gender dynamics
therein, real world parallels will be drawn that offer approaches for teaching women
& gender studies in the classroom using film as a medium.
Instructor: Juliana Montgomery graduated with honors in 2006 with a B.A.
in Film Studies and a focus in Comparative Women’s Studies from Spelman College
in the United States. She co-taught several film related workshops under the guidance
of Ayoka Chenzira, a filmmaker and recognised pioneer in African-American independent
cinema. Juliana is deeply fascinated by storytelling around the world through visual
medias. Her work has brought her to the Czech Republic as a Fulbright Fellow where
she produced a documentary examining images of women reflected in Czech visual culture
during the communist and post-communist periods. In 2008, Juliana shot and directed
a short documentary on location in Afghanistan, which focuses on educational opportunities
for Afghan high school students. Currently, she is based in Singapore as a 2010-2011
Henry Luce Scholar working with the Asian Film Archive.
