This workshop aims to shed light on a revival of neorealism in cinema today, where fiction films employ documentary techniques, using non-professional actors, and which are often regarded to seem more real than reality itself. By discussing and comparing excerpts from Red Dragonflies and other examples of personal cinema by directors such as Naomi Kawase, participants will be shown how real-life experiences and influences may be interpreted to film. An understanding of the production of personal cinema also extends seamlessly to other artistic forms, where authenticity and a sense of immediacy are the qualities of skilled and affecting works of art. Film Synopsis: This thoughtful film is conceived after the filmmaker uncovers an old home video of a hiking trip back during his high school days. One strand of the film follows Rachel and her two friends as they explore an abandoned railway track that runs through a dense forest, but an unforeseen incident brings their little adventure to an abrupt end. Elsewhere, 26-year-old Rachel rekindles an old friendship with a high school friend. When a little boy from her past reappears, Rachel finds herself retracing a trail of iron and wood. Wistful and mysterious, the film depicts a world littered with incongruity, absences and traces of childhood dreams. Instructor: Liao Jiekai is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Singapore. He received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and lectures Media Education and Visual Arts (International Baccalaureate) at the School of the Arts. Since 2005, he has directed several short films, most notably Clouds in a Shell and The Inner City, which was selected for competition at the 2nd Asian Berlin Hot Shots. He is a founding member of 13 Little Pictures, a film collective that champions innovative feature films, hailed by critics as the “real New Wave” from Singapore. His active involvement in the Singapore film scene brought him credentials as producer and editor of several independent films in Singapore. Most recently, his own debut feature length film, Red Dragonflies won the Special Jury Prize at the prestigious Jeonju International Film Festival, especially noted for discovering independent filmmakers.
