This workshop is particularly relevant to educators who teach English, Literature, Visual/Media Communication and Cultural Studies. Participants will be coached on how to decode moving images through an exploration of narrative, filmic techniques and context. In developing an understanding and appreciation for the language and art of the film media, participants will be provided with strategies on how to provoke and generate critical questions about a film’s creation and its purpose. Through the use of short films, educators will learn how to effectively teach film through analysis of key scenes and will be taught how to clear copyrights for films used for educational purposes. Instructor: Tan Bee Thiam leads the Asian Film Archive as its founding director and is the secretary-general of the Southeast Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Archive Association. He is the Producer and Curator of the well-received Asian Film Archive Collection: Singapore Shorts and Royston’s Shorts, a series of DVD anthologies featuring emerging filmmakers. At the Nanyang Technological University, he lectures on Asian Film History and is author of a forthcoming book chapter, An Independent Spirit: Images of Resistance in Key Contemporary Singapore Films (Cornell Press). Professionally, he has performed jury work for the international film festivals of Berlin, Locarno and Hawaii. Most recently, he joins the jury panel of the Asian Film Awards at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. In 2009, he founded 13 Little Pictures that completed 7 critically acclaimed feature films in 2009 and is developing 7 new feature films for 2010.
