In recent years there has been a dramatic growth and focus in the academic field on film philosophy. Film philosophy describes an important new direction in the discipline of film theory, one that primarily recognises film as a medium that inspires new ways of thinking, experiencing and imagining our relationship with the world. A central concern of film philosophy is the way film allows us to think through philosophical concepts in a way that is particular to the moving image. This workshop will explore ways in which film can be used as a vehicle for the study of philosophy. Specifically catering to polytechnic, college and high school educators, the workshop will provide participants with numerous examples of how to use film to illustrate key philosophical ideas. With reference to the Knowledge and Inquiry (KI) syllabus and other college and high school subjects, participants will derive a better understanding of how to utilise film as pedagogical tool for demonstrating the constructed nature of knowledge and reality. Dr. Nick Mercer received his doctorate in English, Communication and Cultural Studies from the University of Western Australia in 2008. His thesis explored the intersections between cinema, consciousness and Continental philosophy. Dr. Mercer has published articles on film and cyberculture and given numerous papers on cultural theory and cinema at leading international conferences. He is currently the teaching coordinator of Literature in the Humanities Programme in the Centre for Scholastic Excellence (CSE) at Hwa Chong Institution.
