In this workshop, the infamous Parker-Hulme Murder Case that shocked New Zealand in 1954 will be used as a case in point to illustrate how it can be effectively explored in the Language Arts classroom via a close study of historical texts and its realization in film art, namely Peter Jackson’s film Heavenly Creatures (1994) and dramatic art, Michaelanne Forster’s play Daughters of Heaven (1992). The presenter will outline dramatic filmic and literary strategies, for analyzing the murder and its socio-cultural implications by considering the historical context of 1950s Christchurch and the subtext of literature of varying text types written in response to the event. In addition, he will probe the methods and motivations of the murder; the methods and motivations for both the film and play (which are conversely very different); the essential differences between theatre and film; and most importantly, the often tenuous and uneasy relationship between factual events and work based on factual events. The workshop will explore the distinctions we draw between fiction and non-fiction film genres and how the above strategies may be applied to other learning outcomes in Language Arts. Ken Mizusawa is currently the Subject Head of Language Arts and English Coordinator for the Gifted Education Programme (GEP) at Dunman High School. He designed and implemented the new Language Arts curriculum with the launch of the Dunman High Programme (DHP) in 2005, a new six-year school-based programme leading to the GSCE ‘A’ Level Examinations.
