How do we define genre? When is a film a genre film? How do we categorize films into genres? These are just some of the questions which will be addressed in this workshop. The first part of the workshop focuses on the concept of film genre itself and participants will examine the usefulness of genre as a historical marker and taxonomic system for understanding film and film conventions. In the second half of the workshop, participants will examine specific film genres including classical and post-classical Hollywood film, film noir, the western, wuxia martial arts, as well as number of other significant genres. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a working knowledge of key concepts of genre theory and an understanding of the dominant features of a number of popular film genres. Dr. Nick Mercer received his doctorate in English, Communication and Cultural Studies from the University of Western Australia in 2008. His thesis explored the intersections between cinema, consciousness and Continental philosophy. Dr. Mercer has published articles on film and cyberculture and given numerous papers on cultural theory and cinema at leading international conferences. He is currently the teaching coordinator of Literature in the Humanities Programme in the Centre for Scholastic Excellence (CSE) at Hwa Chong Institution.
